AMA Series Modern Support Classes

copied from the forms you have posted:

[ Evolution 3 Classes: May have been produced with water cooling and have linkage type rear suspension, but they cannot have disc brakes or any power valve type mechanism built directly into the engine. Yamaha’s YZ 1982-1984 are the only eligible motorcycles allowed to use a power valve mechanism ]

Last night reading through the AMA Vintage Days race forms noticed the usual Power Valve bikes wordage for the EVO-3 class, but they ommited the exception for 82-84 Yamaha's?

Surely this must be an oversight, otherwise the only class someone (ME) could race the 82-84 Yammy's in would be "Non-Current"?

I also just got back working on the 84 CR250 so I can race non-current. Gonna be pretty exciting this year, racing 4 different bikes and all 3 days.

Thinking on this some more, I guess I'm really bout the only Pitracer member that this does affect, not many YZ racers on here.

KO...............84 YZ125....If we can get him to race moto
McGuire........YZ250.....But it's non-current class

Mooch......................RM
Mosher.....................RM?
Pit...........................RM
Beenridin Sr...............RM
Beenridin Jr.............. .RM
My boy Anthony.........RM
MXKid.......................Maico
Maico Mark................Maico :)
DMX153.................... KX or Whatever he can borrow :)

Who else did I miss?

I'm sure it was a typo. Allowing the YZ's with PV into those classes is pretty much a standard. Kind of like how the "dual shock" classes allow the early YZ monoshock.

I like your rider list. I see that DMX153's Mid Ohio racer is already for sale. Does Holly know you have such large committment issues? haha.

NQ, you might just be thinking too much.

I have some nice photos of the '83 YZ 125 at Smith so I really don't need to go back there...

Rick McGuire had a good looking '84 YZ 250 last year along with that very fast '87.

Yea, I know.
Usually over-thinking on the wrong and stupid stuff.

I hope McGuire don't show up with that 84 YZ For Sale again, not sure I can say "No" to that bike twice. :(

Yea, $2500. and worth every penny.
I'm thinking no takers and had to haul it home as well.

Here's a quick update. McGuire is keeping his 84 YZ250 and plans on racing it in the Evo3 class and racing his 87 in the Non-Current class. He picked up a 1974 TM125 to ride 125A on saturday. As for me, I'll be running Evo3 on an 84 RM125. Not sure what bike I'll be riding in the non-current class but it sure as hell won't be an RM250! I just can't for the life of me ride a modernish 250 2-stroke without grimmacing under my helmet (unless it's KRH's air cooled KX250).

Last year at Mid-Ohio my younger brother and nephew came out to spectate and had a lot of fun. So much fun that we will also have another entry for vintage days at Mid-Ohio! My younger brother, who is into mountain biking more than I'm into MX, threw down a challenge that he would race Mid-Ohio in the Vet 30 B/C class on my 84 RM125 but I had to do a mountain bike race with him at Vulture's Knob! And so the cross training begins......I haven't been on a mountain bike in roughly 15 years. My brother (Doug) hasn't ridden a dirt bike since junior high! We are both looking forward to having a great time.

Ha - nice! I've ridden quite a bit at Vulture's Knob back when I used to hang with the MTB goons more. Kari rode it as well once.

I also have an 81 YZ250 that has had every bearing/seal replaced and has a fresh top end. Installed gold valves in the front and then had Race Tech do the rear shock mod that uses 2 springs rather than one and also installed a gold valve in the shock. With the suspension now working so well it'd be a great bike for EVO2.

BUT...I put all that effort and $ in the YZ and have barely ridden it due to focusing more on the 84 RM250 that I bought just as the YZ restore was done. Decided to just concentrate on doing EVO 3 with the RM as I have a soft spot for that era RM. I'd ride the 81 YZ250 in the EVO 2 class too...but I know I'm not in good enough shape to run 4 motos without pooping out in the 4th moto.

Mooch....So you did get the Eibach dual spring, gold valve RaceTech mod in your YZ250 too (I lost track...) I really like mine and want to race the 81 YZ250 this year.....if you ride yours....you can at least be assured to beat my out-of-shape-ass......

Becareful with that MTB racing, I bought a MTB to get in better shape for vintage racing back in 2000. I ended up getting hooked on all things cycling and raced until 2006 !

I would be in Evolution 1, class #28 251 to Open B/C but have at least a year of back healing before jumping on a mx bike.

More than likely wait until 2015 to race as I have spent the past 4 years in too much pain plus have to wait to see what the long term out come is.

I do plan to spend the weekend at Mid-Ohio as a spectator but guess that is the next best thing to racing as I miss the sweet 2 stroke aroma....LOL!

So I'm I reading this correctly, any bike with a Disc brake is consider a Non-current bike? Didn't AMA have a EVO4 class last year with front disc brake only?

Yes you are reading that correctly. A bike with a front disc brake is considered non-current. Might as well just run your 96 KX250.....if you still have it lol.

My vintage experience has only been 2 years at Mid-Ohio but I am wanting to do this series except for the Illinois round (just too far away). Why are these vintage races so much more expensive per class ($40 pre-entry and $50 post entry) than the local race fees of $25 and a savings of racing 2 classes? Maybe I'm starting to feel the money pinch of raising kids lol.

Dave you haven't begun to feel the money pinch of daughters yet, wait until the teen/college years!
