Based at AMA's Pickerington, Ohio, office, the Government Affairs Editor will produce a large amount of editorial content for the AMA and our sister organization, the All-Terrain Vehicle Association (ATVA), with a focus on riders' rights and government affairs issues as they apply to highway and off-highway riders (both recreational and competition). This is a high-production position that will need to write large amounts of copy under deadline for both print and web.
Specific duties include:
* Serves as government affairs editor for the AMA, with a focus on government section and legislative features, working with government relations staff in satellite D.C. office as well as in home office in Ohio.
* Analyzes and digests complex government-related issues and writes news stories and press releases to enhance AMA's and ATVA's message while following AP stylebook
* Ensures editorial style consistency and grammar accuracy in AMA-produced media with respect to AP stylebook as well as AMA-specific exceptions
* Assists with writing and assembling American Motorcyclist magazine, including proofreading and editing on deadline
* Completes detailed analysis of variety of issues resulting in proper messaging from the AMA Communications Department
* Writes blurbs and stories for AMA websites on legislative and other issues as needed
* Participates in AMA social media outlets, including conceiving and posting items and blurbs
Shoots photos, and writes features and hard news
* Writes and/or edits brochures, letters, etc. produced by creative team for various departments, and updates/writes on-hold script for telephone system
* Writes news releases, PR materials and other copy as needed
* Communicates with external and internal contacts including public and AMA staff
* Answers e-mail inquiries from members
* Assists in occasional on-site events, including coverage and PR
* Excellent interpersonal communication skills required. Must work well with others and be comfortable occasionally representing the AMA in public settings
* Other duties as assigned
Bachelor's degree and 5-10 years of professional experience required. Candidates with a strong reporting background preferred. Motorcycling experience is a plus but not required. Proficiency with industry-standard software, such as InDesign and Microsoft Office, is necessary. Familiarity with website Content Management Software a plus.
