I have been on 5 cruises and have enjoyed everyone of them, some more than others but it's all what you make of it. I recommend a couple things: 1st of all I would try to get on a very large ship, the larger they are the larger the stabilizers and less likely for the ship to be tossed around. Secondly, the newer the ship the nicer the amenities and typically the latest extra's for your entertainment. I've done both Royal Caribbean and Carnival and feel that the Royal Caribbean ships have better service, food and ships but if you are looking to party then Carnival would be a better fit. Also, base your trip around what you want to do, do you want a different destination everyday or do you want to be at sea most of the time, you can look at each ships daily itinerary and decide what cruise fits you best. If you want to do excursions do your own research and book your own a head of time. You will end up with a better experience, usually way small groups of people and a more personal tour. I also recommend doing at least 7 nights because the short cruises are the cheaper ones where they use the older smaller ships, with less amenities, crappier stops/islands and the service isn't as good. Also, if your not claustrophobic get an inside room or one down a couple levels, that can save you money because your typically not in your room other than to sleep, anyway. However, if you don't mind spending the money then, I highly recommend getting a room with a balcony. Also, If you are a drinker, I do recommend getting the drink package, it will save you a fortune. I can understand going to an island and plopping you arse down but do that after you have done a cruise and checked out some islands and then go back on a later vacation to your favorite. The other thing is when the ship comes into a port that your not that interested in or you don't want to run your arse off all day exploring the island then stay on the ship and you will have it all to yourself. If you want to know any of my favorite islands just ask and I will share with you my favorites and why and some of the beaches look just like the pics in Hershies post above.
