Lacing wheels

How true should the wheels be? Lacing new rims and having a hard time getting them dialed in. I wonder how true stock or purchased assembled wheels are?

I'm at about .040 tir. Seems hard to get it much better.

When lacing new wheels I've never used a dial indicator, just a truing stand arm, my eyes and ears. But to me up and down (wheel hop) is more important than side to side. Use a rubber mallet to bang on the spokes to make sure they seat.

For motocross, .040 is fine. Getting it better means starting better and patience at
the end. Don't sweat it unless you're doing roadrace or long track dirt track or desert.
Forty is fine.

I laced new spokes to my slightly tweaked YZ 250 rear wheel. No more broken spokes and I can't tell that the wheel isn't perfectly true. But then it took me almost an entire season to realize that I couldn't control my bike because of a worn out front axle. But it goes straight and turns just fine now with a new axle...
