My hero passed away All of us guys who were into M X in the seventies wanted to be Marty The original Moto Cross hero. He was killed with his wife in a dune buggy accident. A really great guy. A big loss to the MX family

Marty Smith, the motocross legend, has died at the age of 63. Smith died on April 27 in a dune buggy accident alongside his wife, Nancy.

I recently gave Davey Coombs a picture I took at Mid Ohio It was Marty Smith and Marty Moates in a rent a car On Saturday they had a truck course set up for the fans to watch truck racing. With their open face Honda red white and blue helmets on they blew thru the snow fence in their rental Camaro. After hitting a couple mud holes the windshield was packed with mud. Next thing you saw was a head pop out the passenger window yelling directions to the driver how to get around the track. They trashed that car ! RIP. Martys

Can't remember if it was a 125 National or the 125 GP at Mid-Ohio MX park but there was a section in the back of the track that was like a double step down jump. At the time doing a 'double' was unheard of, that was until Marty Smith came thru pegged and did what no one else did that day. That one move alone was good for aver a second a lap and a win. He humiliated the competition.
