Is this bike more catered towards schoolboy and women's classes? What are thoughts and opinions for the bike? Anybody ride one ?

i have rode 2 of the 150 sx and i liked them both the 2011 is great i was able to jump everything at crow canyon and rail the corners with no problem its kinda like a 125. btu you dont really have to ride the clutch just hold the throttle wide open. but in all its a nice bike. And im a woods ride but that is one of the few motocross bikes i like.

I'm looking for a 2 smoke. I don't want to spend 8 grand for a bike, then another 2 or 3 when it blows up.

I'm thinking about the KTM 150, or the KTM 250. Yeah...250's aren't as fun to ride I don't think. I miss screaming my supermini and RM 125 back in 03. Ever since I switched to 4 strokes I feel like I got faster, but lazier as a rider. And, by all means, motorcycles are fun to ride period, but there is something about riding the 2 stroke that makes you really feel like a rider.

I feel like a 150 sx would be perfect for me in the +25 class. But perhaps not, maybe I should just pick up a 250 2 stroke so I'm not severely underpowered. On the national spectrum I know I could pound down some harder, consistently faster laps at Loretta's on a 150 as a whole. I feel like i'll tire out way too quickly on a 450 for longer races, and even a 2-stroke 250 might tire me out pretty quick.

I feel for my weight of 155lb, that I could use the power of a KTM 150sx to be competitive with some 200+ lb riders on 250 2 strokes and 450's...

That was a mouthful, what are your opinions (the pitracer selection) on my rationale for bike selection? Is it stupid to try and qualify for Loretta's in +25 on a 150? I know that class is very competitive. Would power be the deciding factor at the regional that tells me whether I'm taking vacation in August or not?

George, I rode the 150 down at Crow too and really liked it. For comparison sakes I'm 6'2"/200 lbs.
with gear on and the bike pulled me around just fine. It handled nicely and all the components were
top shelf. When I got back on my Husky 125 I felt it ran just as well and handled better, but I have
it set up for my personal taste. You will be more than competitive in +25 on a 125 or 150 2 stroke.

The only reason I'm thinking about KTM is because they keep innovating the 2 strokes. Yamaha hasn't really done anything to theres except change graphics since 2005. Plus I figure a 150 over a 125 because I'll bet they're more reliable in the long run than taking a 2 stroke 125 and blowing it out to 144cc's.

I think a 150 with a pipe and different gearing would be all I would need to do. I'm still interested in those 350's though...I got to get to a KTM demo ride day. We've got to a day in age where it's too expensive to take a risk on purchasing a new bike without riding it first...

Georgie,

Depends on the kind of rider that you are and what suits your skills as to whether a KTM 150 SX or KTM 250SX or KTM 350SX would be the best bike for you to get to Loretta Lynn's. At 155 lbs, you can ride any of the bikes and not be worried about losing too much power based on your size......... but think about the tracks that you want to qualify through and what type of bike works there. For example, last year, Dave Jones used his KX250 to get through the regional at Baja Acres due to the nature of the DEEP SAND and it's power robbing ways. He didn't think he could get through the regional on his 125 even though he used that to win Loretta Lynn's this year.

A KTM 150SX is essentially a KTM 144 premade by KTM. It's the same 125 / 200 bottom end as it's always been since 1998 paired up to a cylinder / crank that yields 144cc wrapped in the latest frame / suspension components. The motor is nice and runs cleanly but like a 125 on steroids. It runs fast and will scream to the moon with the right pilot aboard, but you better be a good shifter and good at carrying your speed through the corners. But if that is your style........ it will work for you.

The KTM 250SX is a nice 250 2 stroke that will have plenty of power that won't hold you back anywhere. A good 2 stroke rider on this bike will be able to hang with any 4 stroke rider as the power isn't the issue....... it's the style of power and type of riding style that works or not on the bike.

The KTM 350 SX is "supposed" to be the best of both of the 4 stroke worlds. The light feel / flickability of the the 250F class while giving as much power as the normal rider can use for motocross. The thing I don't know about is the maitenance schedule on these compared to a 250 / 450F......... 450's can run a year or 2 on a top end / valve set up with clean oil and air filters......... where 250F's are so demanding on the maintenance side that they are super expensive to keep running at top notch performance.

If I were in the market for 1 bike that can do it all on a small budget............ I'd get a 250 SX 2 stroke as the bike won't hold you back anywhere, is inexpensive to run and rebuild and can do any type of riding you will want to do with relative ease.

I think you'll get SMOKED on 150 in +25 at LL......

Yes, but honestly Georgie you're going to get smoked anyway. I know you are a good rider and fast, but sorry you don't have anything for the likes of Robbie Reynard no matter what bike you're riding.

My hope is to make LL in two classes this year and in one of them I plan to race the RM144 for the fun of it.

Well Georgie you said you wanted to buy one of my bike, here's your chance. The guy I sold my 2008 KTM 144SX that I turned into a 200SX has it for sale on KTM Talk. I don't think the guy really rode it much...

I rode the 150 at crow this year and to be honest I was not impressed. It had too much grunt of off the bottom and signed off early. I had to shift it more than my yamaha 144. In the corners when I tried to ride through in a gear high it just wanted to wheelie or bog so alot of clutch was required no matter what gear I chose. The other complaint I had with ALL the ktm's that day is the brakes. Every one I rode (which was all but the 450 woods bike) had a terrible front brake squeal and they were grabby but not progressive.

The suspension felt right in line with my bike which tells me it probably could be better with a little time testing on it.

I could have rode the 250f all day long even with the crappy front brakes. It was on of the easiest and funnest bikes I have EVER ridden. Fix the front brakes and I might convert to the dark side ........

WoW is that 200sx SWEEEEET !!!! I always wanted one in a modern 07 & up frame and there it is .... How much does the guy want for it?

Pit, I'm not planning on winning Loretta's but I'm for damn sure gonna be on the lead lap. But has MX sports revised the rule for ex-pros in +25 since Reynard?

Robin has a solid point about bike selection. Any ktm demo days in the near future, I gotta ride these bikes to be sure? Haven't been on a ktm since I rode a 65s in the late 90s.

And Cameron PM me what you sold that bike for.
