Stop eating Whoppers

I did some investigating..Burger Kings effective tax rate in 2013 was 27.5 and Tim Horton's in Canada was 26.8. While our tax rate is higher (different state to state because each state is different and these rates reflect state and federal tax together) our tax laws offer exemptions. In order to reform the tax codes we would lose exemptions but would be taxed a flat rate thereby making the taxes much easier to compute. To state our corporate taxes are high is true, one of the highest, however it is more complicated because of the loop holes and exemptions. The very highest I found was in Saudi Arabia which taxes oil and gas companies at 85%, Saudi companies at 0% and all others at 20%. Doesn't pay well to own a gas or oil company!! I did notice that many countries have been lowering their corporate taxes quite a bit in the last few years but the U.S. has remained the same since 2006. So I guess it isn't Obama's fault!!!
Anyway I thought all this was quite interesting. I would imagine the reason we won't be seeing any major tax reform is because many companies (large corporations) have learned to use the exemptions and loop holes to keep their taxes low or sometimes zero. If it were low but a flat rate they would end up paying more! I'm sure our lawmakers benefit with they way it is also!!
I couldn't find anything that suggested allowing the money to be returned to the U.S. tax free.

Its not really the effective tax rate that matters, its the fact that the USA is the only country that taxes the WORLDWIDE income of US companies. So that a US company's factory in Germany that sells to a French customer has to pay USA taxes on the proceeds. No other country including Canada does this. Time for tax reform.......

Yes, I read that also. Do they also pay taxes in Germany? If so, not really worth being in business!
More than just tax reform...many parts of the government need an over haul. Like the EPA. We need them it is true but there are so many when really all we need is persons to monitor the laws that are already in effect. Sometimes I think they come up with new laws simply because they have to do something once in awhile to warrant their paycheck!

Good vid until they put Rush and Hannity in there.
I can agree with both sides and somewhere in the middle is the answer. True Capitalism does not work any better than Socialism. We know this from history.
One thing I will never understand is why we borrow money from China and then give aid to so many other countries. Some of those countries hate us and still we give. Can anyone explain that one?
I also understand that we spend more money on military than all of Europe...I don't understand that either. It is no wonder that when anything happens they all look to us and our military.

I know it is easy to blame Obama for a lot of things but what about all that happened before he took office?

In a perfect world I can see how true conservatism would work because I feel the far left liberals take things too far.

There is no reason to get angry with me because I am more than willing to listen to both sides of the coin. Trust me I get a lot of it from my Republican brothers. I also know how difficult it is to have to live on ADC having had to rely on it myself for several years when the company I worked for pulled up stakes and moved to Mexico. After divorcing my first husband, who put us to near bankruptcy with his passion for racing cars, I spent 10 yrs. trying to support myself and three children with little help. We need a helping hand out there, however it should be limited. Does not surprise me in the least that so many are on Food Stamps. Many though are our elderly and quite a number are military.

You may be a constitutional conservative and even not know it. Yet...

I don't think so...I am just more open to listening to both sides and see problems on both.

Well, there you go. If we abide by our constitutional system then both (or all) sides can be heard. Issues are then debated, deliberated and voted on by representives of the people. But if our system is subverted, well then we have what we experiencing today.

Yes, well there you go...our Congress is so broken they can not even take issue with what the majority of the people support. Such as minimum wage, immigration reform, and gun control via gun registration laws.

Better look further...I am not certain of Burger King but I know McDonald's has had record profits. But what I said about supporting them because of low wages is a fact. You are right these used to be teenager jobs but no more. I agree they are partly to blame themselves (the employees) because many of them did little to advance themselves as far as education goes but that does not excuse the plain facts that we DO end up supporting these people.
It is true that the U.S. has high corporate tax but they also have far too many loopholes so what good does it do. Plain and simple we need tax reform. Lower the taxes but close the loopholes. I think that was my point. But also the point would be is it fair for Burger King or any other company to remain here in the U.S. and feed off of us and yet take and pay their taxes elsewhere. Not at all. There will always be low wage jobs...someone has to do them. Not all are college material. Perhaps they won't get rich off of these jobs but they should at least be able to house and feed themselves without our assistance.

So Burger should pay their employees more because McDonald's made "record profits"? By the way, which McDonalds? Stores are franchised individual small businesses. Pay checks come from store owners, not McDonalds corp.

Since we taxpayers are "subsidizing" Burger King's payrolls, then if Burger King layed everybody off, and closed their doors, we would save the taxpayers a fortune, based on your premise. Or maybe Burger King is actually "subsidizing" or reducing how much a struggling family is dependent upon the government.

Again, why is it Burger King's responsibility to support families of people who lost their real job just because they have the greedy audacity to offer part time opportunities? - Lets say you had an offer to do a one year job on the west coast, during which you would be away from home, that paid triple your normal income. In other words, you would be making "record profits". Lets say you wanted to offer one of the neighbor kids a job, mowing your yard once a week, your mower, your gas, $25 for 3 hours work. You pat yourself on the back for giving the kid an opportunity to make some spending money. So after you hire the kid, your find out he's actually 25 years old, has 2 kids, lost his $50k job at Solyndra, and his unemployment ran out. Do you have a moral responsibility to pay him a "living wage" since he needs it, and you are making enough to pay it, or should he be content with what he agreed to work for, while he does what is necessary to obtain real employment?

"Loopholes" is another buzz word. Yes, there are lots of loopholes in the tax code, but NO, they are not for everybody. Loopholes are for businesses and industries that happen to make the government's list of selected winners such as "green" energy, or political activism. "Cholesterol and obesity" industries do not get on the tax loophole list.

The majority certainly do not want immigration reform or any form of gun control. According to the polls I have seen, the majority want the border to be secured and the recent influx of illegals to be sent back to their home countries. I have never heard any argument describing how immigration is currently 'broken' in the first place. There are laws on the books that need to be followed. If you follow the procedure, in time you might become a citizen of the US, legally. Pretty simple. Only people that do not understand economics want minimum wage increased. Gun control does nothing but keep guns out of the hands of law abiding citizens.

The poll numbers I have seen indicate otherwise. I do understand economics and I disagree that raising minimum wage would hurt the economy. Wages should and must be raised in order to keep up with inflation. At present all wages are at a stand still while corporations and the referred to 1% are making higher and higher profits. This has been increasingly evident by looking at the growth charts (I'll find one for you when I have more time) dating back to the 1960's. Think about this..a few years ago you paid 10 to 15 to practice..now it is 25 (I am in no way faulting the track owners because they had to do this to cover costs) and are you earning a higher amount now that would allow you to absorb this increase? If you are you are a small minority.
Immigration laws also need addressed. Even most Republicans acknowledge that. There is an increasing number of backlog for immigrants wanting to come into the country legally. Secure the border, yes, but address the present system.
In many ways and on some issues I am quite conservative but certainly not all and especially not when it comes to some of the social issues.

Our local government is asking us to stop supporting Burger King. From what I understand they are merging with a Canadian fast food facility and moving their corporate headquarters to Canada to avoid paying taxes. I understand that many of you are Republicans and perhaps will feel this is OK but look at it this way. Many of these large corporations pay zero in taxes because of our SORRY tax laws have loop holes that allow them to get away with this. In the meantime they pay their workers poor wages and in return we sorry saps have to pay for their medical care and food in order for them to get by. The only weapon we have here is to stop buying our products from these business's who need us fill their pockets and get richer.
When does the little guy get a break.
Can't blame a company for going somewhere else where it's cheaper to operate.

Our government just wants more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more. AND MORE. It's ludacris. YOU CAN'T EVEN START UP A BUSINESS RIGHT NOW WITHOUT GETTING A COLONOSCOPY. (without lube)

I have a feeling MR President made this statement:

"eeeevverybody's gotta pay their fair share, eeeevvvveen if that means that some companies go elsewhere. And those companies that go elsewhere are......desserters! Theeeeeyyyyy should be frowned upon for not paying their fair share. I pay my fair share.....soooooooo should the rest of these people."

So this solves the problem?

I still don't see how the immigration laws are broken. So it takes a while to get here. Good. That is how it should be. Why do we need so many immigrants anyway, considering how high our unemployment rate is currently? Of course R's and D's are both for more immigrants, especially low skilled and poorly educated. D's seem them as potential votes and R's see them as cheap labor. Meanwhile the middle class gets screwed.

Polling results are manufactured and then promoted by a partisan media to create an fake populist movement. A clever method employed in an attempt undermine our constitution system. Who trusts the media polls?

Duh...who do you think picks all that fruit and vegetables you may eat? You don't honestly believe that Americans would stoop so low as to do those jobs. It is not the immigrants who are hurting the middle class you silly bean.

I couldn't find the chart I was looking for but this shows some interesting numbers although most of you may pooh pooh it because I believe he writes for Mother Jones.

Americans will do any job, if it pays enough. Simple free market principles. From the late 80's to just a few years ago, fast food typically paid higher than minimum wage, because there was more work to be done, than workers to do it. Now e have far more workers than jobs for them. A few posts back you argued that the government should raise minimum wage and force Burger king to pay higher than market value for their employees jobs. In this post you contradict yourself by suggesting we hire illegal aliens to keep wages below market value. What do you think would happen if the agriculture industry could not find people who would work for the wages they offer? The same thing fast food did in the 80's - offer more money and compete for the available labor. Illegal aliens suppress wages and keep them below market value.

My wife is a LEG

My wife is a LEGAL immigrant of 4 years and I can tell you first hand that the immigration system is an expensive, complicated, bureaucratic, slow, nightmare. It needs reformed. Nobody has proposed any actual reform. Amnesty for coming illegally is not immigration reform. That, however, has absolutely nothing to do with the problem of illegal aliens invading the country in record numbers. When they changed the term "illegal alien" to "undocumented immigrant" it was for the sole purpose of trying to confuse and equate illegals with legitimate immigrants. Immigration has never been a problem, and has made this country great. We are a nation of lawful immigrants. We are NOT a nation of illegal aliens.

Before my wife could come to this country, we had to prove that she would not have to be supported by the taxpayers in any way. It required volumes of documentation, hundreds of dollars in legal costs, and hundreds more in government fees, and a year wait. it has required follow up fees, meetings and documentation. It burns me to no end when I see all these illegals waltz across the border, demanding to be taken care of on the taxpayer's dime, and getting government provided free legal services.

The process for people to immigrate to the US legally needs to be improved. That won't help with the illegal invasion though. The border needs to be closed down tight. Then we need to start sorting them out, who goes back, who can stay. Nobody who came illegally should ever be afforded citizenship or voting rights, even if they are permitted to stay.

When we were looking for a home to buy property tax rates were a big part of the decision. We picked a home in the suburbs due in part to the high tax rates in the City.
