This has been an issue forever and we can all name popular tracks that have been shut down because of it.

The AMA has a grant that you can apply for to get free testing equipment.

Who is ready to step up and take the lead when it comes to proactively managing sound?

AMA sound testing kits available
December 04, 2014

Application deadline is March 31

The AMA Government Relations Department is giving away sound testing kits to AMA Districts, club members and others who educate riders about sound.

The kits contain a Type 2 sound meter, a tachometer, training materials, a spark-arrestor probe, personal protective equipment and a storage case. Kits are awarded through a competitive grant process. Nine kits will be awarded in 2015.

Applicants must complete a form and return it to the AMA Government Relations Department by March 31. Forms and additional information are available from Marie Wuelleh, government affairs specialist, at American Motorcyclist Association, 13515 Yarmouth Drive, Pickerington, OH 43147; at (614) 856-1900, ext. 1224; or at MWuelleh@ama-cycle.org.

Applications are considered twice. So, those who submitted applications in 2014, but were not selected, need not submit applications to be considered for the 2015 grants.

Any sound testing being done locally? I believe I was only checked once at a HS and that was several years ago.

I think it would be interesting if some local promoters started testing for FYI information, but did not enforce anything. That way all of us could kind of find out where our bikes are, and perhaps be a little more conscious of it next time we buy a pipe. I don't think my bike is that loud, but I have always heard that Dr D pipes are loud, and that is what I run.

I has the stuff to do it......I think we should probably do it at a practice....testing at races might turn it from "hey lets see whats up" to protest city.......

The idea is not to exclude anyone from riding but to make them aware that their bike or quad is excessively loud
and that you are affording them the opportunity to do something about it so a facility doesn't get shut down.
Who wants to be "that guy" that caused a track to close?

The idea of testing at practice days makes the most sense at first.

Ask yourself...when was the last time you repacked your silencer?
More than a year ago? See your dealer, accessory store, pipe manufacturer or packing provider.
It doesn't take that long to do and as I understand, 4 strokes actually run better with the back pressure from new packing.
2 strokes need to be repacked too.

If I was a track owner and had a house within a 1/4mi of the track I'd be worried.
Sure they might complain individually but rest assured they are talking with others behind your back.
Especially as your facility becomes more popular or holds larger events.

This is a multi-decade issue that people refuse to address which is sad, imo.

So which track owner/organization took the few minutes to fill out the application?
