great point about the socks. silver impregnated socks are great too. the army standard issue socks are amazing. Jeffries are good too. $7 for 2 pair, and they come all the way to your calf...althought the issue socks do have 80% cotton.
also try superfeet insoles. The superfeet grey has merino wool layer. issued sock and wool layered sole, your feet are happy for hours. When I did land nav in texas, it was 90 degrees, out there for 8 hours in the hot beating sun, my feet were slightly damp by the end. not drenched, the sock wicked the moisture up. But my feet can get soaked at work with regular socks and shoes.
